Mobile Workshop #1 8 30 a.m. Walking Tour of Historic Amsterdam with Ruud van Soest of City Walks Leave Apple Inn at 8:00 a.m. Once you have seen Amsterdam by boat, you must walk it, too. We will walk through the old town of Amsterdam that was founded 700 years ago. We will see some of the oldest buildings, some of the most beautiful (according to architects) and some of the ugliest (according to votes in the local newspaper). We will follow the defensive walls and the monastery route of the old city, which is both interesting and amusing. We will see examples of Jewish, Buddhist, Catholic, Muslim, and Protestant places of worship. You will also see how the city was literally built on water, and the battleground of the riots of the1960's fighting to preserve the architecture and affordable housing against a planned highway through Amsterdam's city center. Ruud van Soest is a specialist in the history and architecture of Amsterdam and gives many walking tours to professionals.

Monday October 13th Participants can choose either a Mobile Workshop all day program in Rotterdam or another mobile program in Amsterdam Rotterdam: Social Policy, Planning and Design (Our longest day of the conference. We will leave from Apple Inn lobby at 7:15 a.m.) This is a one day tour of Rotterdam covering the housing experiments, urban renewal, design and preservation of the city. Note to cover costs of trains, bikes, speakers, and museum, we require a supplemental fee of $75 dollars. Architectural bike excursion Rotterdam, city of modern architecture We will cycle through the future of Rotterdam! This tour takes you past new building projects in Rotterdam, with the banks of the river Maas as the most vibrant locations. Visit sites such as the Lloyd quarter, Waterstad and the Kop van Zuid that give the city a whole new look. Because of harbor activities moving out of the city towards the sea, a lot of wonderful locations by the waterside became vacant. Former warehouses that were converted into attractive apartment buildings contrast wonderfully with new architecture and both help to create the new ‘places to be'. Included is a visit of the spectacular Cube House. Also, you will see the work of Rem Koolhaus, Piet Blom, Jo Coenon, Van Berkel & Bos, Adrian Geuze (West 8) and other great architects. Architectural walking tour Inner-city Rotterdam
The Inner city walk is very suitable as an introduction
with the architecture of Rotterdam.
You will get an overview of the constantly changing ideas about the lay out of Rotterdam. Included
is a visit of the spectacular Cube House. More than half a century of
labor has been put into the innovative and daring architecture of the city's
centre and still the inner city's development is in full motion. To get an even
better idea of this transformation we will also take you to pay visit to the
City Information centre, a visitor's centre for architecture, town-planning and
living in the city. Note:
Depending on demand, these bike and walking tours will be repeated in the afternoon.
Bike tour is mostly flat but you should be able to ride for about 5 miles-with
one steep incline on the Erasmus
Bridge. 12:00pm Lunch with Dr. Paul Stouten Dr. Paul Stouten is writing a book on urban regeneration and sustainable development will be with us for part of the day. Paul is an Assistant Professor with the technical university of Delft in the department of urbanism and is Chair of Urban Revitalization and Management.
